If you use cassava flour or tapioca starch in your formulations, there’s something you need to know: even clean-label, plant-based ingredients can be subject to Prop 65 warnings in California.
Proposition 65 (also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act) requires businesses to notify consumers if their products expose them to chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm—and lead is one of them. Cassava, a root vegetable grown in tropical regions, can naturally absorb lead from the soil. If that lead exposure exceeds 0.5 micrograms per day for reproductive harm or 15 micrograms per day for cancer risk, a Prop 65 warning may be required. At Onset Worldwide, we help our customers navigate this regulation with lot-specific testing and sourcing transparency. Whether you're launching a new bar or reformulating a snack, we can guide you through ingredient selection and exposure analysis. Need help ensuring your cassava ingredient is Prop 65 compliant?
